The Wellspring Church Centre was purpose-built to meet the needs of local people, in the urban heart of Watford, and it is time to expand. In 2011 the doors were opened to a high-quality, purpose-built facility constructed with the community in mind. Over 120 housing units were built next door and from the outset The Wellspring became a place where local people could find a warm welcome, help to find work, free English Language teaching, and a community facility within walking distance that they consider their own.
In the first year of operation, around 6,000 people accessed the café and other community rooms, not including Sunday services or church-based activities.
Within 5 years the Monday-Saturday footfall had increased by 275% to 16,553 visits and the room usage by community groups and agencies/businesses had also tripled. The building is used, the rooms are full and we need to expand.
Today, the centre is at the heart of the community. The once expensive Wellspring Café has been converted into a free community lounge, The Living Room, the town centre’s Food Bank distribution hub and a place where local people can find peace, free internet access, free refreshments and Community Money Advice for those who need it.
The Wellspring Church family has more than doubled in size since we moved in, and on Sundays our facilities are too cramped. We need more space especially for children and young people to discover community and explore the Christian faith.
We have planning permission for an exciting extension which will complete what was always a two-phase project. We will build flexible activity rooms, spaces tailored for children and youth, more space for creative arts, small-group counselling, education and training. We will also continue to employ a professional staff team to provide businesses and agencies with affordable conference space with friendly, top-quality service. This will enable us to double the number of local people we can welcome into the centre, from those on low incomes, looking for debt advice and community groups needing space to local training organisations and SME businesses looking for affordable meeting space.
We were able to build The Wellspring through a mixture of property investment, personal donations, bank finance and, in partnership with our local SureStart charity, a sizeable grant from the East of England Development Agency.
Now we face a golden opportunity to finish what was started in 2011, and as a result help thousands more receive the help they need. This is about handing on to the next generation a facility fit for purpose: It is time to extend, and we need your help to see this vision become a reality.
